Hiking - Walking: Playa Cobaticas to Bolnueve Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Max Speed: Distance Covered: 8.46 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Sunday 25th February – walk ***** Playa Cobaticas to Bolnueve – mainly
sunny – 8.46 miles, 4 hrs 25 mins out.
Good night right on the beach at Playa Cobaticas near Canada de Gallego and
woke to another top sunrise before it clouded over for a while. Relaxing
start finishing my 4th book of the holiday Mag has read 7! then after a
late breakfast with the sun returning we packed a picnic and set off at
11.24. Our plan was to walk back to Bolnueve where we saw the amazing
sandstone rocks yesterday along the coast track. Leaving the plastic
greenhouses behind we came to another camper encampment. It was a mix of
campervans, some towing 4x4’s and even a caravan - goodness knows how
they got that down to the beach. There was also a group of dreadlocked,
Germans with big dogs – disgusting, even spitting (and that was just the
girl!). We thanked our lucky stars that we had parked where we had and
hadn’t risked the steep section of road just past us as it would have led
us straight to them! The track really does go up and down and winds its way
inland. It is not supposed to be used by vehicles, only walkers and bikes
but as usual that is ignored by the locals! We followed the track for the
first part, having a word with a couple of Brits struggling on the bumpy
hilly track on their bikes, before walking to a once beautiful but now
derelict villa/farm surrounded by a circle of walls - we couldn’t work
out what they were for? but we spotted a Hoopoe and some Black Wheatears :)
We were then overtaken by a young lady on a mountain bike who turned off
the main track and headed towards the rocky cliff, we followed her and then
walked most of the way by the edge on a well walked path with crystal clear
blue water, small sandy beaches for Naturists and all with a stunning
mountain backdrop! There was some serious up and down as several small
gorges/coves had to be tackled but it was great fun in the warm sunshine.
As we neared our destination we passed multi coloured rocks as the track
passed through narrow rock gorges only just wide enough to get a car
through. We then walked down a new wooden walkway to a beach for our lunch,
I checked my GPS and discovered we had walked very hard 4 miles already!
All we had to do now was walk back! We continued round a rocky headland
with some caves, got a glimpse of the rocky formations we visited yesterday
and then set off back to the van. We walked back on the rough track which
was still hard going and we were pleased we didn’t try to do it in the
van! Back at the derelict house a goatherder was out with his flock and
then we saw the noisy baby goats in a small enclosure! We were very glad to
get back to the van after our second 8 mile+ walk in a row, both glad we
wore our walking boots/shoes as sandals are making our feet sore:( We both
had a paddle to sooth our aching feet and boy is the water cold. Never was
a cuppa and cake so welcome as we soon dozed off. Then a delicious Lidl
rice meal, early night and move off in the morning for yet more adventures
but perhaps a day off from walking!

Monday 26th February – Relax then short drive – sunny and warm.
Woke to another lovely sunrise with light airs and the sea like a mill pool
:) It seemed too nice a day to drive off or to walk after a hectic few days
so decided to just relax here. Had breakfast on the beach. I did my
exercises for the first time in over a month then just chilled on the
beach. Mag knitted while I read, then lunch followed by more of the same.
At about 2.30 the sun was shrouded in light cloud so chilled. We were
getting bored with laying about so decided to move just down the coast to
Cope where we saw a wild tortoise last year. We were packed and off in 15
minutes, got a little lost in the maze of orchards and greenhouses but
found the right road in the end. The oil light came on as we are losing a
little oil each day so as we had a big climb up a mountain I stopped to top
it up. At the top of the climb we stopped quickly where we stayed a night
last year with stunning views down to the Parque Reginal Cabo Cope –
Puntas to take a pic. Then it was down to the flatlands again where
busloads of workers were picking in the fields. Through the pretty little
seaside resort of Calabardina. We had passed some large encampments of
campers on the way and there were a few on the outskirts of the town but
very few near the beach? We stopped at the little fort famous for its
fossilised beach but carried on to Playa de Rambia Elena accessed along a
bumpy track, it was further than we remember and no vans about which made
us a bit nervous. We parked at our spot from last year and there was one
van down on the next small beach so felt better about staying. Cuppa and
cake time followed by a doze and read then M & S corned beef and mash with
a nice sunset. Tomorrow if we are feeling fit we might go tortoise hunting
up the mountain or just move on to Mojacar the world is our oyster,
anything is better than being in Felixstowe at the moment as it snowed and
the fountain at the bottom of our road froze!!!
